Cal Baptist University announced Friday that the Lancers will begin the transition to Division I athletics and will be joining the Western Athletic Conference.
CBU, currently in Division II participating in the PacWest Conference, will need five years to complete the exploratory and transition process to earn Division I status.
The WAC currently consists of Cal State Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon (Phoenix, AZ), University of Missouri-Kansas City, New Mexico State, Seattle University, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, and Utah Valley.
CBU will remain eligible for all PacWest championships and NCAA D-II postseason play through the 2017-18 season. University officials plan to apply for NCAA D-I membership in June 2018, according to a release from the university.
“This is another step our University is taking to help us achieve a high level of excellence,” added CBU Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. “We are excited to go on this journey – remembering the success of the past but building towards an exciting future. It’s another opportunity to honor Christ through excellence in athletics.”
Dr. Parker will join us LIVE on the Inland_Sports Show on Fox Sports Radio 1350AM on Saturday at 11:15 am.
