BASEBALL: King nips Corona 3-2 in completion of protested game

The King Wolves held on for a 3-2 victory at Corona on Friday, after the initial meeting between the two schools on Tuesday was protested by the Wolves.

Friday’s game began with King leading 2-0 in the top of the second inning with a runner on third base; exactly the scenario when the protested play occurred on Tuesday. The protested play resulted from a ground ball up the first base line in which the Corona catcher tossed his glove at the ball; whether it was fair of foul prompted King to protest the game.

Corona put runners on the corners in the bottom of the 7th inning on Friday, but could not push across the tying run.

BASKETBALL: The Step Brothers Fab 15 (12-20-16)

It was a relatively slow week for high school basketball in the Inland Empire, but a couple games changed the landscape on the ‘Step Brothers Fab 15’ rankings in week four.  As games pick up again over the holiday, teams will definitely be trending in both directions, vying for the top spot in our weekly rankings.

Centennial and Rancho Verde stayed number one and two this week, with Centennial defeating REV by 21 and Etiwanda by 15, both solid victories for the Huskies heading into holiday tournament play.  Rancho Verde sat the week out preparing to play Leuzinger in the heralded, Damien Holiday Classic after Christmas.

Cajon dropped seven spots after losses to Laguna Beach and Los Alamitos at the Charlie Wilkens Memorial Classic at Whittier High School this week.

Riverside Poly bounced back after losing to Notre Dame in the Kiwanis final last week by easily handling a good Chaparral team behind 31 points from freshman phenom, D.J. Davis.  The Bears seemed to have adjusted since losing Ronald McQuay to an Achilles injury.

The biggest surprise of the week was the near upset Roosevelt almost pulled off on defending National Champion, Chino Hills by narrowly losing to the Huskies 76-68, despite a great effort from Jamar Baker’s 29 points, on 7 three pointers in the loss.

The rest of the ‘Fab 15’ stayed pretty much in tact except for a few minor changes.  Chaparral and San Bernardino dropped out of this week’s rankings as REV makes its way back in and climbs to number 12.  Vista Murrieta checks in at number 15 after remaining undefeated at (6-0), but they have yet to be tested as we head into week five.

The entire ‘Inland Sports’ team will be out in full force over the holiday break and we are excited to see all of the great basketball the Inland area has to offer.
