Baseball & Softball All-CIF Selections

The CIF Southern Section released its All-CIF baseball and softball teams on Monday.

Yucaipa pitcher Tyson Heaton was named the CIF-SS Division 2 player of the year, with coach Ralph Grajeda taking home the coach of the year honors.

In softball, Norco slugger Kinzie Hansen earned the Division 1 player of the year award as Rick Robinson was tabbed as the coach of the year!

BASEBALL: Yucaipa rolls to CIF-SS D2 Title

Yucaipa pitcher Tyson Heaton tossed a complete game to propel the Thunderbirds past Beckman 8-1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 2 Finals at Cal State Fullerton.

The T’birds busted the game wide open with a 7-run fifth inning.

Yucaipa last won a CIF-SS title in 1994.

The CIF Southern Section softball playoffs resume on Tuesday; including Santa Margarita vs. Norco in Division I, and La Serna vs. Yucaipa in Division II.

Yucaipa QB Keo McChesney: Marines Recruiting Station Riverside Athlete of the Week

Yucaipa quarterback Keo McChesney passed for 267 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 111 yards to lift the Thunderbirds to their first ever victory against Redlands East Valley, 43-27.


VOLLEYBALL: Yucaipa tops Citrus Valley 3-0 in CBL Showdown

The Yucaipa volleyball team defeated Citrus Valley 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 26-24) in a battle for first place in the Citrus Belt League. The Thunderbirds grabbed sole possession of the CBL-lead as they move to 6-0 in league action.

Yucaipa is coming off a season in which the T’Birds reached the CIF-SS Inland Division quarterfinals, but now they make the move to Division 6 for the playoffs. Yucaipa returns 10 starters on offense including quarterback Nathan Martinez and center Paul Bakenhus.

BASEBALL: Tyler Wells Signs with Minnesota Twins

Former Cal State San Bernardino and Yucaipa HS pitcher Tyler Wells signs with professional contract with the Minnesota Twins. The Twins drafted Wells in the 15th round of the MLB Draft making him the Coyotes’ high pick since Aaron Brooks went to the Kansas City Royals in the 9th Round in 2011.
